Hello,

I hope the start of September hasn’t felt like a slap in the face after you’ve (hopefully) enjoyed some time off in the Summer.

I spent mine mostly working on Things I Cannot Talk About, yet again, which is why I skipped the August newsletter entirely, and why this one feels like a redacted recap instead of the real thing. So here’s what I can actually share:

Logomania

As a sort of palate cleanser between two bigger projects, I played around with classic logos, reinterpreting them with the two models I always have at hand—my cat and myself. It was a tonne of fun, especially since I hadn’t done any vector illustration in years.

My favourite of this series is probably the Penguin Random House one, which is coincidentally the only of these companies I’m a customer of—I don’t drink alcohol, skate, or buy tires, nor do I indulge in luxury leather goods, junk food, or girlie magazines. (What am I doing with my life?)

If you’d like to have any of those printed on a t-shirt or think I missed out on a really cool logo to do over, let me know.

To see them in full size, head to the project page.

From left to right and top to bottom: Penguin Random House, Rothaus, Playboy, Thrasher, Wendy’s, Hermès, KFC, Michelin, Paulaner.

My muse/Prozac on four legs, Isadora.

The Intruder

A birthday card I made for one of my friends, who recently moved houses.

Other Things I Enjoyed This Summer

Niki de Saint Phalle at Le Grand Palais

Seeing La Mariée at the Centre Pompidou when I was a young was the first time I became aware that women could have their place in a museum as artists and not as models, so Niki de Saint Phalle’s work holds a special place in my mind.

The Grand Palais exhibit juxtaposed some of de Saint Phalle’s work with her husband’s, Jean Tinguely, which I am less fond of, but it was incredible to see those machines in movement.

La Mariée, 1963

L’Accouchement Rose, 1964

Crucifixion, 1965

Le Monstre de Soisy, 1966

The aptly named “Hell, a Small Beginning”, Jean Tinguely, 1984

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, Parisians’ love of fly-tipping is an endless source of fascination for me. I photograph the abandoned things I find interesting, and the Mystery VHS tapes on a good background made the top of the list in an otherwise dull summer.

And that’s it for this month! Thanks for being here. If you think this newsletter would be of interest to somebody else, feel free to forward it to them.

Till next month, take care,

Cath
