Cover Your Tracks

Following my desire to illustrate book covers this year, I created a series of six, inspired by songs that regularly pop in my head for no apparent reason.

As with all my side projects, the main point was to have fun and experiment, so I used a few different media and techniques: cut paper, ink and acrylic paint, ink and nib, ink and brush, digital colour and collage.

I got my scissors and scalpel out for a wink to the great Saul Bass

I tried the pouring technique for the first time - kind of uncontrollable, messy, and surprising. Loved it.

A Homage To Nicolas Cage

Following the surprising experience of finding out Nicolas Cage is my favourite actor—at least according to the number of his films on my Letterboxd “Cheer-up films” list—I decided to draw him in some of his best roles.

Work in progress. Ink on A2 paper.

The Procreate sketch. It’s only January, but I’m pretty sure this is going to remain my best pun of the year.

Need it on your walls? Prints are available in my Etsy shop.

The Key

A drawing of something that popped in my mind, and an excellent example of the “dirty sketch vs clean final artwork” phenomenon.

Prints available here.

Other Things I enjoyed in January

The “things” are actually singular this month, as I was too busy to do anything beside making art and going to my day job:

It snowed for one day and for once there was actually enough of it to look pretty and crack under your shoes with every step instead of immediately turning into brown slush. It was lovely.

And that’s it for this month! Thanks for being here. If you think this newsletter would be of interest to somebody else, feel free to forward it to them.

Till next month, take care,

Cath
